Faulty RCD, nuisance-tripping MCB, or failed protection device leaving your Essex or East London property unprotected? KLIC ELECTRICAL replaces consumer unit components quickly and correctly — certified and same-day available.
RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) are the critical safety devices at the heart of your consumer unit. An RCD that has become sticky or over-sensitive may fail to trip under genuine fault conditions — or may trip nuisance repeatedly on a healthy circuit. A faulty MCB may fail to trip under overload, or may trip prematurely under normal load. Both represent a compromise in your electrical safety.
KLIC ELECTRICAL tests, diagnoses, and replaces faulty RCDs, MCBs, and RCBOs across Essex and East London — carrying common replacement components from leading brands including Hager, Wylex, MK, and Schneider. We always test before we replace, and test again after replacement to confirm correct operation.
RCD tested at ½×, 1×, and 5× rated tripping current using a calibrated RCD tester — confirming actual trip times and establishing whether the device is performing within BS 7671 limits.
MCB assessed for correct current rating, trip curve type (B, C, or D), and breaking capacity for the connected circuit — identifying both faulty breakers and incorrectly specified ones.
Correctly specified replacement RCD, RCBO, or MCB sourced from van stock or ordered for rapid delivery — matched to your existing consumer unit manufacturer and specification.
Consumer unit safely isolated, faulty component removed, replacement installed with correctly secured cable terminations — and all connections torqued to manufacturer specification.
Full performance test of the replacement device carried out on completion — including RCD trip time verification and MCB operation under simulated conditions.
Minor works certificate or EIC issued on completion — documenting the device replaced, specification of the replacement, and post-replacement test results.
Consumer unit component replacement involves live mains power and requires correct specification. Getting it wrong creates hidden safety risks.
Replacing an MCB with the wrong current rating, trip curve, or breaking capacity appears to work — but creates either an under-protected circuit (risk of fire or shock) or a nuisance-tripping circuit. We always verify the correct specification before sourcing a replacement.
The incoming mains supply to your consumer unit remains live even when the main switch is turned off. Consumer unit work requires specific safe isolation training and procedure. This is not DIY territory.
Component replacement in a consumer unit must be documented with an electrical certificate. Our NICEIC certification ensures this documentation is legally valid — important for property sales and insurance purposes.
Based in Aveley, Essex, KLIC ELECTRICAL covers the full Essex and East London area — including Thurrock, Basildon, Chelmsford, Brentwood, Romford, Barking, Dagenham, Ilford, Stratford, and all surrounding areas.
A structured, safe replacement process — most completed same-day with full certification.
Tell us which circuit or device is affected and the symptoms. We confirm likely parts needed and arrange a same-day or next-day visit.
The faulty device tested with calibrated equipment to confirm it is performing outside specification — before any replacement is carried out.
Consumer unit isolated, faulty device removed, correctly specified replacement installed with secure connections and correct torque.
Replacement device tested for correct operation. Minor works certificate or EIC issued and work documented.
A faulty RCD or MCB is a hidden safety compromise in your installation. KLIC ELECTRICAL replaces them correctly — right specification, right brand, right procedure, right certification.
RCD vs RCBO — Which Should You Have?
An MCB provides only overload and short circuit protection. An RCD adds earth leakage protection to a group of circuits. An RCBO combines both in a single device — protecting each circuit individually. Modern 18th Edition installations use RCBOs for all circuits as best practice. If you have MCBs without RCD protection on certain circuits, we can advise on upgrading.
We carry Hager, Wylex, MK, and Schneider components — covering the most common UK consumer unit brands for same-day replacement.
Every component replacement is certified and backed by our NICEIC approval — legally valid documentation issued as standard.
Most RCD and MCB replacements completed same-day. We carry common parts on the van for immediate repair.

Common questions about RCD and MCB faults and replacement in Essex and East London.
Common signs of a faulty RCD include: tripping on circuits with no detectable earth fault (nuisance tripping), failing to trip when tested using the test button, taking longer than 300ms to trip at rated current (sluggish operation), or failing to reset after a genuine fault has been cleared. We test RCDs to BS 7671 requirements using calibrated equipment to confirm performance.
Signs of a faulty MCB include: tripping immediately when reset with no apparent fault on the circuit, failing to trip when the circuit is genuinely overloaded, not resetting at all after a fault has been cleared, or physical damage to the device. Note that a correctly functioning MCB tripping repeatedly indicates a genuine circuit fault, not necessarily a faulty breaker.
Consumer unit component replacement is not recommended as a DIY task, even for those with some electrical knowledge. The incoming mains supply to the consumer unit remains live even when the main switch is off, creating a genuine risk of fatal electric shock. In addition, using an incorrect specification replacement creates a safety risk that may not be apparent but can cause fire or personal injury. We always recommend using a qualified electrician.
A single MCB or RCBO replacement typically costs £80–£150 including the part and labour. An RCD replacement costs £100–£200 depending on the brand and type. We carry common components on the van for same-day replacement. Call us with your consumer unit brand and the circuit/device affected for an immediate fixed-price quote.
Yes — if you have a consumer unit with MCBs and a split-load RCD arrangement, we can upgrade individual circuits to RCBO protection on a circuit-by-circuit basis. This provides superior protection — each circuit is individually protected against both overload and earth faults. We advise on the most cost-effective upgrade approach for your specific board during the site visit.
Replacing a like-for-like MCB, RCD, or RCBO in an existing consumer unit is generally not notifiable under Part P. However, if the replacement involves any circuit alteration, or if the board is replaced in its entirety, it becomes notifiable. We assess the scope and self-certify all notifiable work with Building Control at no extra cost.
