Tripping RCDs, faulty MCBs, or a consumer unit that just won't behave? KLIC ELECTRICAL diagnoses and repairs fuse box faults fast across Essex and East London — most problems fixed on the first visit, fully certified.
Your consumer unit is the safety hub of your home's electrical installation. When it develops a fault — whether that is an RCD that repeatedly trips, an MCB that will not reset, or a whole bank of circuits with no power — it needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a NICEIC-approved electrician with the right equipment and experience.
KLIC ELECTRICAL repairs all types and brands of consumer units across Essex and East London — from modern dual-RCD and fully-RCBO boards to older rewirable fuse boards. We carry a wide range of replacement components on the van, allowing us to fix most fuse box faults on the same visit with full certification issued on completion.
RCDs tested at 1× and 5× rated tripping current to check response times and confirm whether the device is faulty, nuisance-tripping, or operating correctly with a genuine circuit fault.
Each MCB checked for correct operation, overloading, and trip characteristics — identifying faulty breakers that trip prematurely or fail to trip under fault conditions.
Faulty RCDs, RCBOs, or MCBs replaced like-for-like or with upgraded equivalents — sourced from stock on the van for same-day repair in most cases.
If the consumer unit itself is functioning correctly, we carry out systematic circuit testing to identify the downstream fault that is causing the protection device to operate.
Loose or corroded neutral connections and earth terminations within the consumer unit checked and tightened — a frequent cause of unexplained voltage problems and nuisance operation.
All repair work tested to BS 7671 on completion. Minor works certificate issued for component replacements. EIC issued for any consumer unit board replacement.
Your consumer unit works with live incoming mains power. Any work requires proper isolation, correct test procedures, and certified components.
The incoming mains supply to your consumer unit is always live — even when the main switch is off. Working inside a consumer unit without proper training and isolation is extremely dangerous. Our engineers follow safe isolation procedures on every job.
Replacement MCBs and RCDs must match the correct current rating, curve type, and breaking capacity for each circuit. Fitting the wrong component creates a hidden safety risk. We always specify the correct part.
Any repair or replacement work at your consumer unit must be documented with the appropriate electrical certificate. Our NICEIC certification ensures this documentation is legally valid and accepted by insurers.

Call or message us describing the problem — tripping, no power to circuits, or flickering. We arrange a same-day or next-day visit.
Engineer tests the consumer unit components and connected circuits to identify whether the fault is in the board itself or a downstream circuit.
Faulty component replaced from van stock or downstream fault repaired — all work carried out safely with the board correctly isolated.
All circuits tested after repair. Electrical certificate issued. Fault and repair documented in a written report.
A faulty consumer unit is not something to ignore or bodge. KLIC ELECTRICAL brings NICEIC accreditation, proper diagnostic equipment, and a stock of common replacement parts to every job — fixing it right, first time.
Should I Repair or Replace My Consumer Unit?
If your board has a single faulty MCB or RCD that can be replaced like-for-like, a repair is usually the right choice. However, if the board is old, has rewirable fuses, lacks RCD protection, or has had multiple component failures, a full consumer unit upgrade is likely the better long-term investment. We advise honestly on the best option for your situation.
We repair Hager, Wylex, MK, Schneider, and all other consumer unit brands — old and new. No board is unfamiliar to our engineers.
Every repair is certified and backed by our NICEIC approval — legally valid documentation accepted by insurers and solicitors.
We carry common MCBs, RCDs, and RCBOs on the van — allowing same-day repair of most fuse box faults without a return visit.

Common questions about fuse box faults and repairs in Essex and East London.
Fuse box repair costs depend on the fault type. A single MCB or RCD replacement typically costs £80–£180 including the part and an hour's labour. More complex faults requiring extensive diagnostic testing may cost more. We always confirm the cost before proceeding with any repair work.
An MCB that keeps tripping is doing its job — it has detected an overcurrent or fault condition on that circuit. Common causes include: an overloaded circuit (too many appliances drawing too much current), a short circuit in a connected appliance, damaged cable insulation, or a faulty MCB that has become over-sensitive. We test the circuit systematically to identify the exact cause.
RCD tripping in wet weather almost always indicates moisture ingress — either in outdoor wiring (garden lighting, outdoor sockets, or external fittings), in a bathroom fitting, or in underground armoured cable. The RCD is detecting current leaking to earth through the moisture. We use insulation resistance testing to locate the affected section of wiring.
You can try resetting an MCB by pushing it firmly back to the ON position after it trips. If it immediately trips again, there is a genuine fault on that circuit and you should not keep resetting it. Leave it in the tripped position and call us. Repeatedly resetting a tripping MCB on a faulted circuit can damage wiring and appliances, and may create a fire or shock risk.
A tripping protection device means your electrical installation is detecting an abnormal condition. While the tripping itself is a safety mechanism, the underlying cause needs to be investigated. An overloaded circuit, damaged cable, or leaking appliance left unaddressed can cause fire or electric shock. We recommend booking a diagnostic visit promptly.
If your main switch is in the ON position but all circuits are dead, check whether your supply has been interrupted externally (contact your network operator's emergency line on 105 for power cuts). If the street has power but your property is completely dead, it may be a supply fault at your meter or incoming supply — this requires your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) to attend, not an electrician. If some circuits are dead but others are live, this is likely an internal fault we can diagnose and repair.
We advise honestly on this based on what we find. If the board has a single easily-replaceable fault, repair is usually the right choice. However, if the board is outdated (rewirable fuses, no RCD protection, or over 25 years old), has had multiple failures, or is failing an EICR, a full consumer unit replacement provides better long-term value and significantly improves safety. We provide both options and let you decide.
