Yes, but it is slow and not recommended for regular use. A standard 3-pin 13A socket provides around 3kW — adding only around 10 miles of range per hour, and taking 18–24 hours for a full charge on most EVs. A dedicated 7.4kW smart charger is significantly faster and specifically designed for regular EV charging loads.
No, a smart meter is not a requirement for EV charger installation. However, some smart chargers (particularly the Ohme Home Pro) benefit significantly from smart meter integration — using real-time grid carbon intensity and time-of-use tariff data to optimise your charging schedule and reduce costs.
Most modern consumer units can accommodate a 7.4kW (32A) EV charger if spare ways are available. Older units may require additional ways added, or a load management device may be needed if your main fuse is 60A or less.
