Installing an EV Charger at Home in East London: Everything You Need to Know in 2026

Electric car ownership is surging across East London. Here's the complete guide to home EV charger installation for Tower Hamlets, Newham and Hackney residents — from grants to installation options.

Electric vehicle ownership in East London is growing faster than almost anywhere else in the UK. The Ultra Low Emission Zone covering all of Greater London, the 2035 end to new petrol and diesel car sales, and rapidly falling EV prices mean that more and more homeowners in areas like Walthamstow, Ilford, Barking and across Tower Hamlets are making the switch to electric — and the first practical question is always the same: how do I charge it at home?

Why a Dedicated EV Charger is Better Than a 3-Pin Plug

Using a standard 3-pin plug to charge an electric vehicle is not recommended as a regular long-term solution. A standard 3-pin socket provides 2.3kW — enough to add around 8 miles of range per hour. That means charging a typical 60kWh battery from empty takes over 24 hours. It also puts significant strain on domestic socket wiring that is not designed for continuous high loads overnight.

A dedicated 7kW home EV charger wallbox provides three times the charging speed, is installed with a dedicated circuit designed for continuous overnight use, and includes additional safety features including earth fault protection specific to EV charging. The total installed cost — after the OZEV grant — is typically between £400 and £750.

What is the OZEV Grant and Am I Eligible?

The OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant provides £350 towards the cost of a home EV charger installation. The grant is available to homeowners (not tenants) who own an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, and the charger must be installed by an OZEV-approved installer.

KLIC ELECTRICAL is OZEV-approved. This means we handle the grant application directly and deduct it from your invoice — you never need to apply separately or wait for a rebate. The grant applies even if you're combining the EV charger installation with other electrical work like a consumer unit upgrade.

Am I eligible?

  • You must be a homeowner (not a tenant)
  • You must own or have ordered an eligible EV or plug-in hybrid vehicle
  • The charger must be installed at your primary residence
  • The charger must be OZEV-approved (KLIC ELECTRICAL installs only OZEV-approved units)
  • You can claim once per vehicle, at the same address

Which EV Charger Should I Choose?

For most East London homeowners, a 7kW single-phase smart wallbox is the right choice. The main brands we install are:

  • Ohme Home Pro — excellent smart scheduling, integrates with EV and energy tariffs automatically
  • Zappi by myenergi — the best option if you have or plan to install solar panels (diverts surplus solar to your EV)
  • Hypervolt Home 3 — clean design, excellent app, tethered or untethered options
  • Easee One — extremely compact and elegant, good load balancing features
  • Pod Point Solo 3 — reliable, widely trusted, good for straightforward installations

We advise on the best charger for your specific situation during the pre-installation assessment. If you have solar panels, the Zappi is often the standout choice. If you want sophisticated smart scheduling without the solar integration, the Ohme is excellent.

EV Charger Installation in a Flat or Apartment — Is It Possible?

Installing an EV charger in a flat or apartment is more complex than in a house with off-street parking, but it is possible in many cases. The key factors are: whether you have a dedicated parking space, whether there is an electrical supply available at or near the parking area, and whether you have the consent of your freeholder or management company.

In newer apartment developments in areas like Stratford, Canary Wharf and Canning Town, some buildings already have EV charging infrastructure in place or have provision for it. In older blocks in Whitechapel, Bethnal Green or East Ham, it may require more investigation. We carry out free site surveys and advise on feasibility for flat-based installations across East London.

What Does the Installation Process Involve?

  • Pre-installation survey: We assess your consumer unit capacity, cable route, and installation location
  • Consumer unit check: If your board doesn't have capacity for a new 40A circuit, we may recommend a consumer unit upgrade first
  • Dedicated circuit installation: A new 7kW (32A) circuit from consumer unit to the charger location
  • Charger mounting and wiring: Charger installed on the wall, connected and commissioned
  • Smart charging setup: App configured on your phone, tariff integration set up where applicable
  • OZEV grant application: We apply the grant directly at the point of installation
  • Electrical Installation Certificate issued on completion
